gcc
gccとは、GNUプロジェクトによって実装されたコンパイラのことです。大半のUNIX系OSで利用できます。当初はCとC++をサポートしていたため「GNU project C and C++ Compiler」と呼ばれていましたが、様々な言語をサポートするようになり、「GNU Compiler Collection」に名称変更されました。
補足：「devel」について
開発に必要なライブラリオブジェクトやヘッダファイル（lib***.soや***.h）が含まれてるライブラリです。
上記のようにyumを使ってインストールする際に、ライブラリだけでなく、xxx-develという形で、develをインストールすることがあります。これは、インストールしようとしているライブラリが必要とするプログラムをコンパイルするときに必要になることがあります。
次に、ダウンロードディレクトリに移動し、ソースコードをダウンロードします。

ダウンロードできたか、確認しましょう。

上記のように表示されればOKです。
では、ダウンロードしたファイルを解凍しましょう。

上記のように「nginx-1.7.2」という名前のディレクトリができあがっているはずですので、
そのディレクトリへ移動します。

上記のようにディレクトリ内にはファイルやディレクトリが格納されています。
次にこの中の「configure」ファイルを実行して、コンパイル前の環境設定をしてあげます。

configureが完了したら、いよいよコンパイルとインストールです。

これでNginxのソースインストールが完了です。ダウンロードしてきた際にバージョンを指定できたように、ソースインストールする際には、バージョンを選ぶことができます。自動的にリポジトリで判断して「1.4.7」のバージョンのNginxをインストールしたyumによるインストールとは、異なる点の1つです。
最新バージョン、安定バージョン等、ソースさえ入手できれば好きに選べますね。
また、configure実行時に様々なオプションを付けることで、柔軟なインストールが可能になります。
どのようなオプションを付けられるかは、以下のコマンドで確認できます。
オプションは少し多いのですが、一応全て表示結果を載せておきます。

では、次にNginxを起動します。
